ENGL4022 Take home assignment (35%)

Semester 1, 2024-25

Answer all questions concisely. For Q1a and Q2a, most of your answers should consist of jamovi  visualizations  and  analysis  output.  Q1b  and  Q2b,  on  the  other  hand,  should  be answered in prose. Submit your assignment via turn-it-in by 21 Oct.

Be mindful of the university’s strict anti-plagiarism policies.

1.  The  following  is  an  advertorial  on  Spanish  classes  for  young  children  from   The  Standard (www.thestandard.com.hk).

The advertorial makes at least three assertions. While they might sound convincing to many people, relevant evidence was not communicated.

• Spanish is much easier to learn than otherlanguages

• Learning an extra language enhances problem-solving skills

• Young kids are better language learners than older people

AsQ1.xlsx contains data from 90 learners that are relevant to these assertions. The variables are

• Age group: whether the learner is a younger or older kid

• Language learnt: whether the learner is learning Spanish, French, or German

• Perceived difficulty: how difficult the learner feels the language is (0 to 10)

• Test score: how well the learner has learnt the language (0 to 100)

• PS before: problem-solving skill before learning the language (0 to 100)

• PS after: problem-solving skill after learning the language (0 to 100)

a) Analyze the data with appropriate quantitative methods and report if your results support each of the three claims. Remember to include relevant tables/graphs.  [10 marks]

b) In our dataset, age group is defined by just two categories (younger and older) rather than the actual numerical ages of the learners. Discuss the pros and cons of doing so (max 250 words).  [5 marks]

2. The extract below advertises the teaching approach of Duolingo (www.duolingo.com), a prominent online language learning platform.

Likewise, Duolingo implied the following claims without communicating relevant evidence.

•  Quirky sentences are memorable and more fun to learn than common phrases

•  Learners receive materials at just the right difficulty level for their proficiency and/or language background

•  Learners can expect continuous improvement as they progress

AsQ2.xlsx is a survey dataset from 180 randomly sampled Duolingo English learners. The variables are

•  First language: whether the learner’s L1 is Chinese, Korean, or Japanese

•  Course 1: The learner’stest score (0-100) for Course 1

•  Course 2: The learner’stest score (0-100) for Course 2 which happened after Course 1

•  Feedback on difficulty: how difficult the learner feels the course materials are (0-10)

•  Quirky rating: how much the learner enjoyed quirky sentences as course materials (0-10)

•  Common rating: how much the learner enjoyed common phrases as course materials (0-10)

a) Analyze the data with appropriate quantitative methods and report if your results support each of the three claims. Remember to include relevant tables/graphs.  [10 marks]

b) Rewrite the extract (max 500 words) to communicate the above evidence in an accessible and persuasive way for the general public. [10 marks]
