Project Guideline
Please read the instructions in this project guideline carefully.
(I) Project Introduction
Project Title: Data Mining on Apartment for Rent Classified
Required dataset is retrieved from UC Irvine Machine Learning Repository - Apartment for Rent Classified which contains information of apartments for rent in the USA. The source of this dataset can be found at (the dataset consists of two files, one containing 100K records while the other containing 10K records; the one that contains 10K records will be used in this project):
https://archive.ics.uci.edu/dataset/555/apartment+for+rent+classified
In this project, students are required to
(1) Demonstrate their understanding of principles and working knowledge of the data mining techniques learnt in this module;
(2) Apply all the data mining skills learnt in this module whenever appropriate; and
(3) Interpret and present the results in a scientific and concise manner.
Software being used:
The software SAS and R will be used to analyze the data sets.
The formality of group must follow the instructions below:
. Students are required to form groups and work together.
. Each group should have 3-5 members from the same lecture session.
. Students will be randomly assigned to a group if they fail to form a group.

. Students must provide the correct Group ID on all submissions.
(II) Project Assessment Criteria
Total marks of this project are 100. The project assessment criteria include three components:
(a) 30% marks for Group Presentation
(b) 50% marks for Written Report with SAS/R Program
(c) 20% marks for Peer Evaluation
The group/individual performance will be assessed according to the aforementioned components with assessment forms as shown in Annexes 1–3.
1. Group Presentation (30%)
- The presentation MUST be conducted in English.
- The length of presentation is 30 minutes per group (including Question & Answer section).
- Members of the same group will be assessed individually.
- Each group must submit the presentation outline (in PDF format) to the module instructor at least 3 days before the presentation with file naming convention:
“AMS3640 [Group ID] – Presentation Outline.pdf”
2. Written Report with SAS/R Program (50%)
- The report MUST be written in English.
- The report MUST include the following sections:
(i) Cover page (including the project name, module code and title, name and student ID of group members, Group ID, and name of module instructor)
(ii) Introduction
(iii) Methodology and Results
(iv) Discussion and Conclusion
(v) References
(vi) Veriguide report
- The report, excluding cover page, references, Veriguide report, and any other appendices, MUST NOT exceed 15 pages.
- The format of the written report is as follows:
|
Paper Size |
A4 size |
|
|
Margin |

|
Font and Size |
Times New Roman, 12 points |
|
- Members of the same group will normally receive the same mark but adjustment may be made to reflect individual contribution.
- Each group must submit the written report (in PDF format) with SAS/R Program files to the module instructor within 1 week after the group presentation.
- Written Report and SAS/R Program files should be compressed into a single ZIP file for submission with file naming convention:
“AMS3640 [Group ID] - Written Report.zip”
- The ZIP file should contain one folder and two files:
Folder:
> “AMS3640 [Group ID] – SAS/R Program” – to store all data and SAS/R program/project files
Files:
> “AMS3640 [Group ID] - Written Report.pdf” – the PDF format of written report
> “AMS3640 [Group ID] - Veriguide Report.pdf” – the PDF format of Veriguide report
3. Peer Evaluation (20%)
- Each student must submit a peer evaluation form to module instructor in confidence.
- In the peer evaluation form, students must (i) indicate their individual contribution to the project, and (ii) give a mark of 0 (lowest) to 20 (highest) and provide written comments to other group members to reflect their contribution to the project.
- Module instructor will meet with all group members individually if any abnormality is observed in the peer evaluation assessment.
- Students are required to submit the peer evaluation form (in PDF format) to the module instructor within 3 days after the written report submission with file naming convention:
