In the wake of the Civil War, Congress passed the Reconstruction Amendments, which fundamentally redefined citizenship and voting rights in the United States. But though they prohibited certain kinds of discrimination, they left the door open to other forms of voting restrictions.
In addition, the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments, revolutionary as they were, did not extend protections for voting rights to half of the population – women. It was not until the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920 that all women gained the right to vote.
But having a right to vote on paper is different from exercising it in practice.
The Assignment:
Once you have read the sources, compose a thoughtful, well-written essay, in which you respond to the following questions:
In the period between 1865 and 1920, how did the right to vote in the United States expand, and how did it contract? Which Americans gained the right to vote, and which Americans were deprived of it? What arguments were given for expanding or limiting the right to vote?
Note: This is a broad set of questions, and there are several different approaches you could take in answering them. In your answer, focus on providing an evidence-based analysis of what you believe are the key issues related to voting in this period. Be sure to use the primary sources assigned for the course to support your answers.
Sources:
You are not required to conduct additional research for this assignment. Your secondary sources are the class videos, lectures, and American Yawp, chapters 15-20. However, your answer should be based mainly on the primary sources you have read for the class. You can access those sources by clicking on the Perusall link in the left navigation menu in Canvas.
Support your answer with specific quotations and examples from the assigned primary sources.
Format and Requirements:
Your essay should be four to five pages long, with formatting as described in the class syllabus.
Your essay should include a thesis statement that clearly answers the question. The body of your essay should include primary and secondary source evidence that supports your thesis.
Your essay must include primary source evidence. You must use footnotes to document these sources. Your essay should include a properly formatted Bibliography at the end (the Bibliography is not included in the page count).
