Time to complete: This assessment task should take the average student around 10-15 hours to complete, including research time.

Use of generative AI tools: You are permitted to use generative AI tools to help you develop your report for the purposes as listed below (and no other purposes): . To help you brainstorm ideas and perform research, . To help you draft an outline and structure of your report, . To directly suggest readability improvements to your text in terms of grammar and expression. Any use of AI tools must be acknowledged in an appendix included immediately after your list of references by: . Describing the AI tool used, what you used it for and the prompts you provided, . How you used or adapted the output of the AI tool to write this report. Note: Using an AI tool to substantially write this report will be considered potential academic dishonesty. You may be asked to support your submission with an oral examination if determined necessary by the unit coordinator. |
Task Description:
Perform. research and write a formal report discussing a historically significant mechanical engineering machine/object/technology of your choice, explaining its purpose/function, how it works mechanically and why it was/is significant. Your report must address the points listed below.
1. Choose a relevant machine/object/technology of interest to you.
2. Describe the object, its function/purpose and historical background, design evolution etc.
3. Explain how it works mechanically and what form of energy it uses to perform its function.
4. Critically discuss and explain (using logic and good reasoning) why it was/is significant.
5. Use images to aid your written text (you must also provide references to images unless you created them yourself).
6. Collate all the above points into a formal report including a title page, executive summary, relevant section headings, references etc.
7. Word limit is (2000 words +/- 10%) not including any title page, executive summary, table of contents, reference list or appendices. Markers will not read beyond 2200 words and short reports will not adequately address the task to warrant a good mark.
Writing formal written reports is an important communication skill for Engineers to develop, in this unit and others you will often need to write such reports. Use the library resources to help you with report writing skills and referencing, you should also complete the mandatory Academic Dishonesty module before writing your report to help ensure you do not engage in accidental academic dishonesty.
