Goons plc is a successful technology company which has grown strongly over its 50-year history. It has three divisions: MGoons division deals with the production of mobile phones, HomeGoons division manufactures home appliances such as washing machines, refrigerators, etc, while R&D division researches new products on the instructions of MGoons division and HomeGoons division, and is considered to be vital to the survival and growth of Goons. Based on statistics and reports carried out on the first two divisions, the management of Goons plc considers MGoons division to be a rising star which regularly needs to launch new products while HomeGoons division is considered to be the cash cow of Goons, operating in the mature sector.
The CEO has been considering the impact of using a divisional structure and has come to you as a performance management consultant to ask for your advice Specifically, the CEO has asked for your recommendations on how to control each division; that is, whether each division should be treated as a cost/profit/investment centre and also, the appropriate management style. to use for handling staff in each division. The CEO mentioned the different approaches to the use of budget information in assessing performance she learned from an executive course: budget-constrained, profit-conscious and non-accounting style. She would like to know how these approaches might apply to each division given your other comments.
