ENGMP512-25A: Advanced Materials Manufacture

Assignment

The assignment (20% of the overall mark) is divided into two parts: a short literature review (15%) and flipped learning presentation (5%).

Short literature review

This assignment requires you to conduct a short review of the current literature of one of the topics listed below which are connected to the material learnt in this paper and in other materials related papers in the overall study program. The assignment should consider the scientific principles and relationship between processing, properties and microstructure of materials analysing the latest advancement available in scientific journal articles.

The work for the assignment should be in the form of a report which needs to be around 10 pages long (Times New Roman font size of 12, single line spacing) including any figures.

The report structure should consist of the following sections:

•    Introduction: this should comment on the generic aspects of the proposed literature review describing, but not  limited to, the relevance of the topic to the scientific and industrial communities.

•    Technical analysis of the selected journal articles describing the materials, experimental procedures and main findings.

•    Critical analysis and comparison of the results/theory of the different authors of the selected journal articles.

•    Summary: give a summary of the contents ofthe report.

•    References.

•    Please note the referencing guidelines and caution against plagiarism

Plagiarism means presenting as ones own work the work of another, and includes the copying or paraphrasing of another persons work in an assessment item without acknowledging it as the other persons work through full and accurate referencing; it applies to assessment (as defined in the Assessment Regulations) presented through a written, spoken, electronic, broadcasting, visual, performance or other medium” (section 3, Assessment Regulations). Plagiarism is viewed as misconduct under the University’s Student Discipline Regulations and will be treated accordingly.

The final report should be submitted via Moodle by Friday 9th of May 2025. For late submission 5% of the marks will be deducted for each day that the assignment is late unless prior approval has been obtained from the course coordinator.

Marking Schedule for theReport:

Overall presentation of the report: 15%

Introduction: 10%

Technical/critical analysis: 65%

Summary: 10%

Total: 100

Flipped learning presentation

Students are asked to present a poster (and/or slide deck) summarising an allocated "Processing of Composites" topic. The due date for the flipped learning presentation is TBC with students giving a short presentation to the class in that last week.
