Briefing Notes
Task description
This task requires students to conduct research on the technical requirements for an initial prototype for an online application as a proposed solution to solve a business problem provided by an industry partner, using either their own data or a dataset provided in class. The prototype should be delivered in the form of a 1-2 page description of the envisaged analytics solution in response to the industry partner briefing.
Students are encouraged to use an “infographic” style of presentation that both depicts and explains the functional form of the online application as a proposed solution and how it addresses the business problem. The purpose of the prototype is for student to research a range of possible solutions so that feedback from project supervisors and teaching team can be received early in the development process.
Points to cover in prototype
• Summarise the business problem that the online application is intended to solve (what impact it may have for users). If you have talked or surveyed potential users of your application, include some quotes or statistics from them about what they would like to see in the application.
• Describe (draw) what the minimum viable product (MVP) of your online application will look like and how it will function. Provide some examples of what types of features the application will have (for example, how will it display the data, what types of filters will be available, what types of analysis will your application use). You are not expected to develop a sophisticated algorithm at this stage, but you should communicate a rough idea of what the application will do and how it will do it.
• Summarise the technical requirements for the prototype. This should include the programming lan- guage and any libraries that you will use to build the application (e.g., R and R Shiny or an alternate platform of your choice).
• Describe how you will encourage user adoption and repeat usage of your application (what type of messenging and calls to action your application may include).
• Describe what is “something new” that your application will try to offer that others are unlikely to (e.g., a unique way of approaching the data, interface, strategy for driving user adoption, etc.)
Submission Guidelines
The Project Proposal/Prototype (A1) assignment is worth 20 percent of your score in the course and is due in Week 4 (check eCP for exact submission date/time). The assignment should submitted as a PDF document of no longer than 2 pages. Use a clear and concise style of writing and presentation. Use of visual aids (hand drawn sketches, mock data visualisations) to communicate your protoype is encouraged. No references required. Include your name and student number in either a header or footer.
