TEM ASSIGNMENT

2025

CHEMMAT 724 (20%)

Introduction

This assignment is based on the knowledge acquired from TEM lectures. A practical session on TEM and STEM will be conducted to characterize the micro/nanostructure of two samples. Following the practical session, you will analyse the results and compile them into a scientific report consisting of results, discussion, and conclusion sections.

Sample

In this practical session, you will analyse two samples:  1) a provided aluminium (Al) foil sample, and 2) a provided powder sample. The aluminium sample consists of a commercial purity aluminium alloy (> 99wt.%), with iron and silicon as inevitable impurities in the alloy [1] . The powder sample is derived from diatomaceous earth and has been treated with silver nanoparticles. The silver nanoparticles were synthesized through the reduction of an aqueous silver nitrate solution using the sodium citrate method [2].

TEM practice session

The TEM lab session will last for 3 hours. In these three hours, you will get ‘hands-on’ practice on TF 20 transmission electron microscope and acquire some TEM, HRTEM and STEM results. You will obtain SAED, TEM and STEM-HAADF images from Al foil sample. You will also observe the Kikuchi lines from this sample. In the end, you will work on a powder sample and acquire some HRTEM images.

Assessment

You will compose these TEM results and analysis in the format of a scientific report using the provided template and outline. Please carefully review the instructions provided for the scientific report. Additionally, ensure that you have addressed the questions listed in the template by including the corresponding answers in your report.

The length of the report is not to exceed 5 single pages, including references. DO NOT USE DOUBLE COLUMNS.

Submit your journal article as a .pdf file through Canvas. TurnItIn will be used for plagiarism check.

For this assignment, students are not permitted to use generative artificial intelligence text and art generation software, such as ChatGPT and DALL.E 2, in their assessments. You  are  expected  to  complete  your  assessments  independently,  without  substantial assistance from others, including automated tools.
