Digital Manufacturing Strategic Plan - Part
2
Digital Edge Manufacturing Networking Technology
Plan
With the review of user requirements in Part 1 of the Digital Edge Manufacturing Networking
Technology Plan, we are now able to develop an appropriate and adaptable networking framework
that will meet the needs of the company.
Part 1 Review To Be Included In Part 2 Proposal
To tie the general information from Part 1 of the Project to the technical framework in Part 2:
Provide a condensed 2 page review of Digital Edge Manufacturing
Provide a condensed 2-3 page review of the User Domains and their technology needs as
defined in Part 1
Part 2 Technology Framework Requirements
This portion will review the general physical technology implementation requirements for the
proposal.
Wide Area Network – National Offices Interconnection Basic Coverage
Provide a review of what kind of wide area networking components and services will be
needed to ensure communication over large geographic areas such as that of Digital Edge
Manufacturing. This should include a brief review of:
Router placement at each site
Topology of network
Virtual Private Networking or other wide-area technologies needed for secure long distance
communication
Allow for a more substantive NOC at the corporate headquarters to provide general network
overview and backup services for individual building emergency administrative backup
Building Requirements
In general, a secured wireless access is necessary per floor of any Digital Edge Manufacturing
building to support ad-hoc networking and network node movement
There will also be a need for some wired access for items such as projection systems, desktop
machines, printers, etc.
Assume a small switch/hub will be available occasional wired connection needs
In addition to individual room requirements, each building will require:

Wiring closets containing the switches and various wired media hardware
Wireless network authentication server per building
Emergency backup equipment (UPS, redundant servers if needed)
Campus Requirements
Within each campus or multi-building site, the following will need to be included:
Emergency backup equipment (UPS, redundant servers if needed)
A hub / server room which will also be the connect location into national wide area network
Network operations center (NOC) with several administrative consoles and backup
connection capacity
Plant Floor / Laboratory Requirements
With the possibility of machinery (printers, robotics, 3D printers, machine shop components),
wiring capable of withstanding reasonable amounts of electromagnetic interference will be
required
Part 3 General Network Hardware/Software Review
Provide background information for each of the networking technologies you will be implementing
in the final design.
Review of applicable 802.11 wireless standards
Incorporate a brief review of the 802.11 and any other wireless standards you will plan on
employing in the proposal
Include speed, security, authentication standards, and range issues
Review of guided media: twisted pair, fiber, etc.
As there will be some need for traditional media, briefly discuss if you see a need for high
speed wire/optic media and the advantages/issues of each
Review of interconnection hardware – hubs, switches, routers
There will be a need for virtual lans (VLANs), switches and routers in the infrastructure.
Provide a brief overview of the differences between these devices and where you are
planning to incorporate them into the system
Review of security requirements including firewalls, intrusion detection systems,
authentication, encryption standards, and anti-virus solutions
This should comprise a multi-page overview of what security measures each of these
hardware/software security products will provide
Include any discussion of hardware/ software security standards that must be incorporated
to meet financial reporting requirements
Part 4 Technology Framework Design
In this section, combine the user domain needs in Part 1, the physical framework requirements in
Part 2, and your technology selection in Part 3 to create the final Digital Edge Manufacturing
network infrastructure proposal. Besides the content from the previous parts, the following are
guidelines to help with your final proposal.

Diagram - include diagrams for:
General building configuration
Multi-Building / Campus configuration
Server / network management room
Provide hub connection overview for wired and wireless connections
Hardware Vendor Selection –as the project is a general review of networking technology, you do
not need to work within a single vendor or provide extensive description of various networking
hardware/software vendor’s products other than what is necessary to show appropriateness of the
particular item to the particular networking requirement.
