Course Overview:
Knowledge and understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the human body is a foundation for further study in the health field and for understanding the processes that underlie the provision of health care.

Course Goals/General Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to

2. Compare and contrast relationships between structure and function, and systems and homeostasis.
3. Communicate with the health-care team using appropriate medical terminology.
4. Apply the concepts of anatomy and physiology to personal, educational, and health - care situations.

Unit 1: Levels of Organization
Topic 1.1: Introduction to Human Anatomy and Physiology
1. Examine the relationship between anatomy and physiology.
2. Identify the levels of organization in the human body.
3. Describe anatomical position, directional terms, and planes of division.
4. Identify the major body cavities and the organs they contain.
5. Identify and describe the functions of the systems in the body.
6. Explain the purpose and function of homeostasis.
7. Use correct terminology related to anatomy and physiology.
Topic 1.2: Cells
1. Identify the chemical elements common to all living things.
2. Describe the movement of substances and fluids through cell membranes.
3. Describe the structure and function of each cell component.
4. Explain the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.
5. Describe the two types of cell division.
