2024 Full-time Pre-sessional English - Subject Disciplinary Essay (SDE)

Assessment Task Sheet

Task Overview:

Your Writing Assessment will contribute to 50% of the final mark for the course and you must achieve 50+% in the assessment to pass.

Your essay will be marked according to the Summative Marking Descriptors, found in the Course Handbook and the Summative Assessment section on LMO. The use of Generative AI for content generation is not permitted on all assessed coursework on this course.

Task: You must write an argumentative essay in which you take a stance in response to the essay question and support/defend this stance. Your essay must include at least one counter argument and rebuttal in the main body.

You are recommended to develop your own essay question, approved by your teacher, but may wish to use one of the essay questions provided on the next page.

Submission Deadline: 9:00amon Wednesday 21st August 2024

(Late submissions will be penalised at 5% per working day up to a total 15%. Submissions more than 3 working days late will receive a grade of zero).

The essay will be checked for plagiarism and collusion using ‘TURNITIN’. Academic integrity offences will be penalised in accordance with the university and English Language Centre policy. Please refer to the relevant documents in the Summative Assessments of the course on the LMO page.

Core Task Requirements

 •    You must meet the word count of 1100-1300 words excluding the reference list and title.

•    Your essay must include information from at least 4 different academic sources. These must be published in English.

•    You must not use direct quotations of more than 10% of the total word count.

•    You must use a consistent style of referencing to cite all sources and reference these in a

reference list at the end of your essay (following the guidelines in the ‘XJTLU Library Guide to Referencing’ and ‘ ELC Academic Integrity Policy’).

•    Your essay should adhere to the following formatting requirements:

o  be saved in MS Word format

o  have a filename in the format OfficialName_studentID

o  use 1.5 line or double spacing

o  use Calibri, Arial or Tahoma font

o  have a font size of 11 or 12 points

o  include page numbers

1.      Engineers already have many responsibilities associated with their profession; concerns about sustainability should not have to be one of them. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

2.      Electric vehicles are the future of green transport and other petrol-fuelled transport should be phased out. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
