The ability to critically reflect upon oneself and one’s actions is a critical management skill. Managerial self-awareness can be enhanced through examination of one’s own prior actions, which can help improve our understanding of previously unquestioned beliefs and assumptions. Courses such as Foundations of Management provide an occasion for both reconsidering some of your taken-for-granted assumptions, but also to consider other perspectives or alternative ways of viewing and handling management situations.
Generative AI is a resource that will be used more and more by managers to assist them access information, analyse information and organise their time more effectively. This assignment asks you to both undertake your own reflection and use generative AI as a way of making sense of it.
For this assignment, think of a challenging management situation you have experienced, either when you have acted as the ‘manager’(leader) or as the ‘subordinate’(follower). This situation could relate to paid employment, volunteer work, a student club or society you have been involved with (not personal relationships with friends or partners). For example, think of an event where you may have faced resistance, conflict, or lack of compliance. Alternatively think of a management situation where you have had to examine your own values, beliefs, and prejudices when dealing with others.
You should use the framework suggested by Borton to structure your reflection. The key elements of this framework are:
1.What?
(What was the problem issue/What happened/What did I do)
2.So What?
(What was the outcome/What did you learn from this situation/What was important)
An important element here is making sense of the situation using only one or two concepts or frameworks that have been covered in weeks 3 and 4 of the unit)
3.What next?
(How do you (would you) resolve the situation or improve the outcome/How will what you have learnt change your future practice)
(This section of your assignment should be around 750 words).
Use generative AI in this assignment.
After you have sketched your own analysis of the situation and how this might prompt you to behave if a similar situation occurred in the future, ask generative AI tools (preferably MS Co Pilot or Perplexity) to suggest a potential solution to the challenges you faced in your nominated situation. You can interrogate this salutation by providing more detailed information about the situation in follow up questions.
Compare these AI-generated solutions with the strategies and insights you have drawn from your key readings.
Reflect on the similarities and differences between the AI-generated solutions and the solutions you were proposing based on your reading. Discuss which solutions you find more applicable and why.
(This section of your assignment should be around 250 words)
Reading:
Draw on the reading materials from Week 3 (Individual Behaviour in Organisations) & Week 4 (Management & Teams). Supplement this reading with at least three articles from academic journals that relate specifically to the topics of individual behaviour in work settings or management and teams in work settings.
