PSY205 – Exam Practice - Learning and Conditioning Activity

*designed by Mack Ess 2022

Eddie is driving to work in their car. They are currently waiting at a red light and want to turn left. There is no left-turn signal. Their co-worker in the car is worried that they are running late and encourages Eddie to turn fast once the light turns green to try and skip the oncoming traffic (an illegal move called “jumping the light”). The light turns green and Eddie goes for it… and, fortunately, they get through the turn safely. Their co-worker is happy because this means they won’t get yelled at by their boss for being late, and he gives Eddie a high-five for jumping the light, which makes Eddie happy. As a result, in the future whenever Eddie is running late and has to turn left at that light, they jump the light to turn before oncoming traffic travels straight.

1. Was Eddie reinforced or punished for the behavior. of jumping the light?

REINFORCED (because it INCREASED his light-jumping behavior)

2. In what ways was Eddie positively reinforced/punished (based on your answer to #1)?

POSITIVELY REINFORCED – co-worker’s high-five and approval; happiness

3. In what ways was Eddie negatively reinforced/punished (based on your answer to #1)?

NEGATIVELY REINFORCED – took away the stress of being late; potential to annoy their co-worker

4. Based on Bandura’s theory of observational learning, what might their co-worker start doing?

Because the co-worker witnessed Eddie’s reinforcement, their co-worker is likely to also start jumping the light when late

Now fast forward four months later. Eddie gets into a car accident when trying to jump the light at this intersection. They end up having to sit through court all day and they have to pay a fine of $250 for an illegal turn. As a result, they stop jumping the light and start going a different way to work.

5. When the accident happened and they went to court, was Eddie reinforced or punished for the behavior. of jumping the light?

PUNISHED (because it DECREASED his light-jumping behavior)

6. In what ways was Eddie negatively reinforced/punished (based on your answer to #5)?

NEGATIVELY PUNISHED – took up all of Eddie’s day, took away his money

7. In what ways was Eddie positively reinforced/punished (based on your answer to #5)?

POSTIVELY PUNISHED – wrecked his car, embarrassment

8. Is this an example of operant or classical conditioning?

OPERANT – because it is the result of pairing a behavior. (i.e., jumping the light) with an event (e.g., approval, fine, accident)
