TELE 4642: Network Performance: Project [10 points]

All presentations will be held in-person on Friday 08 Aug as per the scedule below in EE 206. Each group gets 15 minutes for  their presentation,followed by 5 minutes of questions.You need not use slides, and can instead walk through the project Wiki(i.e.,Google site)that you have been building in lieu of your report. Each group also has to do a live demonstration of their working code (on your personal laptops).

Project Specification

The project requires you to propose a topic related to SDN,and explore the topic in detail via experimentation in Mininet. You will work in groups of four students, and propose (via  Moodle)the topic and work plan in a 3-minute presentation by Sun 13 Jul by a video recording. The lecturer willapprove the topic or suggest modifications which should be incorporated in the work plan, and will put up the list of allocations on the web-page by Monday  21 Jul.A final presentation and demonstration of 15 minutes per-group is scheduled for week 10(Friday,8 Aug),and a final report/blog is due in week 11(Friday,15 Aug). The experiments have to be done on your own resources. Some potential topics are listed below, but you are encouraged to suggest topics that are of interest to you. You may also find a list of interesting projects at this github respository on mininet.

1.Dynamic routing:In lab 2,your routing rules were static(i.e., topology centric).Make the rules dynamic,i.e.,they can

change on-the-fly based on the load,number of connections or specific TCP/UDP protocols.(Sample1)

2.Dynamic firewalling:Implement a dynamic management of accces control lists. For example, suppose host A is a server. If a specific host B is connected directly to the same switch as host A,then no other host can communicate with host A (in this model B acts as an admin host that goes to the physical location of server A to upgrade it,and during the upgrade time,no other client can access A).(Sample2)

3.Hotel Internet Service:Imagine a hotel room where the

customer can connect their device to the network,but gets redirected to a portal to make a payment to buy some quota (volume or time).Implement this feature using SDN.

4.Statistics:Develop a tool for extracting the flow counters from OVS and displaying them nicely using a graphical tool.

5.Application-layer routing: Route packets for different

applications(identified by port number,e.g., TCP/80 for HTTP) along different paths in the network.

The above list is only indicative;students are encouraged to propose topics of interest. The topic and groups will be finalised by week 7 at which time you will propose your topic in a short presentation.
