Please note that this is an open-ended discussion seminar, and hence these notes relate to points of discussion for the seminar, rather than solutions as such. If you have further thoughts to discuss after the seminar, please use the week 8 discussion forum on Moodle.
1. Please find a modern slavery statement for a company of your choice – perhaps a brand that you buy from regularly – come prepared to discuss this statement and to compare it with the Marks & Spencer’s 2024 statement provided on the Moodle site.
Possible interesting differences might be around:
- Level of honesty – do they claim to have found any modern slavery?
- Supply Chain Transparency – actions taken:
o Do they adequately explain their supply chain structure?
o Do they have a clear modern slavery policy?
o What do they do to prevent modern slavery in their supply chains?
o Have they identified areas of modern slavery risks? And if so, what do they do to assess and manage the risks?
o Do they measure their performance, and how effective are these measures?
o What training do they provide for their procurement staff?
o Do they describe year on year changes? Or is the statement similar to the previous year?
- Do you think the legislation that requires these modern slavery statements is effective? If yes, why? If not, how would you improve it?
2. Reflect on your purchases (food, clothing etc), and think about the packaging choices you are making, and those of the businesses you buy from. What could you change / what could the businesses change?
Possible interesting issues to discuss in the seminar include:
- Have you tried to reduce the amount of plastic you are using as a consumer?
- If so, what alternative packaging do you use (if any)?
- Why have you made changes (or not made changes)?
- What actions have businesses undertaken in the shops you use?
- What further actions do you think they could take from an Operations Management / Supply Chain Management perspective?
