Coursework Brief 2024 -25

Part A- BIM model development (100 marks, 40% of the CW)

Please create an administrative building model according to the requirements given below. The dimensions and materials of components not specified can be determined at your discretion, and elements not required for creation may be omitted. At the same time, the model needs to balance functionality and aesthetics.

(1) Create an Administrative Building Model (70)

① Create levels, grids, and add dimensions.

② Create rectangular columns with a reasonable layout, and the size can be set by yourself.

③ Create wall, floor, ceiling, roof, and parapet models. Set their materials and texture. The outer wall is 300 mm thick; the inner wall (except the sanitary partition wall) is

200 mm thick, and the walls not indicated are in the axis. The outer side of the outer wall is made of a red brick wall, and the inner side is painted with white paint. Both sides of the interior wall are painted with white paint. The partition wall of the toilet is 100mm thick and made of aerated concrete block wall.

④ Create indoor and outdoor stair models.

⑤ Create the glass curtain wall, and the dimension of the curtain wall vertical stile is

100 x 60 mm.

⑥ Create doors and windows. The modeling parameters are required to refer to the settings given in the table and the reasonable location.

⑦ Self-design interior decoration, including tables, chairs, plants, and so forth. List of Doors and Windows

(2) Creation of Schedules and Drawings (20)

① Create a door and window schedule, including the type, width, height, bottom height, and total fields.

② Create a 1-1 section view of the stair model.

③ Create an A0 size drawing sheet. Please place the plan view, east elevation view, 1-

1 section view, and door and window schedule on this drawing sheet.

(3) Rendering and Roaming (10)

① Set the outdoor light source as the solar light source, and the light source illuminates from southwest to northeast.

②  Create and render a perspective view of the southeast exterior floor facing the building. Rendering quality is based on aesthetic clarity. The result is saved to a folder with the filename "Executive Building Rendering. jpg".

③ The roaming time from the terrace to the administrative office in the building via the south gate ramp shall not exceed 20 seconds. Set the export video to 20 frames per second. The roaming video does not need to be exported.

Finally, please upload the model file to LM by Dec. 16, 2024. The electronic file name should be your name + your student ID + module code + Architectural Model.

Part B- BIM application report (100 marks, 60% of the CW)

Background

Suppose you are an employee of a construction company that is located in a less developed region. Your company has both design and construction teams that can do both design and construction work of regular residential and commercial building projects. The design work is currently conducted by using the traditional 2D methods. Now,  the  leader  is  considering  the  use  of  BIM  technology  for  some  relatively comprehensive projects, but he is not certain about the benefits and costs of using this technology  and  is  also  concerned  about  the  risk  of  learning  and  using  the  new technology. So, please do some research on the use of BIM technology for building projects and develop your answers to ONE of the following questions that can help resolve  your  leader’s  concerns  (12pts,  1-2  pages  excluding  the  reference  list  and figures/diagrams, at least four references).

•   How can BIM technology be used in the project design and construction phases?

Or

•   What are the benefits and costs of using the BIM technology?

Or

•   How do you think the use of BIM technology will affect the traditional workflow and project management?

Please upload the pdf file to LM by 5PM Dec. 16, 2024 (hard copy should also be   delivered to EB556 by the same deadline). The electronic file name should be your name + your student ID + module code + BIM application report.
